Cat Stevens karierę muzyczną rozpoczął w 1966. Jego albumy "Tea for the Tillerman" (1970) i "Teaser and the Firecat" (1971) w USA pokryły się potrójną platyną. W 1977 roku zmienił wyznanie na islam, a nazwisko na Yusuf Islam, po czym, w 1979 sprzedał wszystkie swoje gitary, zysk oddając na cele dobroczynne. Powrócił do muzyki dopiero w 2006 roku, wydając pierwszy nowy, studyjny album od 28 lat, zatytułowany "An Other Cup". Poczynając od tego wydawnictwa, jego płyty sygnowane są samym imieniem - Yusuf. W 2014 został wprowadzony do Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
