W listopadzie 1977 roku, po trwającej pół roku światowej trasie, Rory Gallagher i jego zespół polecieli prosto z ostatniego koncertu w Japonii do San Francisco i niemal z marszu rozpoczęli prace nad nowym albumem.
Za produkcję "Notes From San Francisco" odpowiadał Elliot Mazer, który współpracował m.in. z Neilem Youngiem, Janis Joplin czy The Band. Mazer wspominał, że sesje do albumu były nerwowe.
Gallagher nie był zadowolony z procesu miksowania, uważał, że jest zbyt skomplikowany. W 1978 odłożył płytę do szuflady, a zespół rozpadł się. Zaginiony album został zmasterowany w 2010 przez siostrzeńca Rory’ego, który dodał do wydawnictwa również nagrania z występu w The Old Waldorf w San Francisco.
W ten sposób podkreślił, o jakie brzmienie dokładnie chodziło Gallagherowi.
